Hello i've made a couple comments and questions reguarding Peacock bas sin a 180 and i just want to get some more info on them. Ok so i have a 180 (72x24x27) and i wanted to put a few monos and orinos, 1 silver, 1 delhizi bichir, and 1 spotter gar. I want to know is i could keep there together and if so how long i could keep them in there. Also what is the best substrate, lighting, and tank decor for them? I'm planning on having a wet/dry sump with an aqua clear 100, and what is the ideal food for the arow, bass, and gar. I've only seen them eat feeders and shrimp. Also when they grow out of the tank which i'm pretty sure they will what size tank will i need minumum for them? i'm thinking round a 300-450 gallon tank. And if anyone else has any usful information or tips on how they have their P.Bass tank set up and filtrated along with pics woudl be great! Also if anyone has any info or pics of spotted gar, bichirs, or arows i would greatly appriciate it!

Thanks!

I've been doing some searches around here lately as for the best water conditions and environments on this fish and have been coming up a little short myself. Haven't googled yet, but tend to try and get my information from here first..

Yes that is why i joind this site because it looked like a fun and relyable source or information about most everything that has to do with the aquarium hobby.. Can anyone answer my questions?

1st for the info on gar/arrow/bichir you'll have to check those sections for answers on those fish. Also I know the bass and arrow will get along but not sure about the others.

2nd, tank decor is up to you. When buying small pbass or any small fish they need some cover to feel safe and will get more bold as they grow. You can use bare bottom, sand, gravel, etc for substrate. Other than that just regular lighting should work fine. Water temp you want high around 84 for the bass.

There's another thread not far down that has fishrmann2 replying about growth rate for bass but I believe you're looking at 18" or so in two years. What size tank you'll need will depend on how many you get but imo you're looking at minimum a 300g wide, but probably realistically something more in the 500g range.

The bass should do well with them except for when they are fingerlings. Baby peacocks and gars dont do well together. The temperature should be around 84+. Keep the PH around 7 and make sure the water is clean. Keep everything steady too, they dont do well in constantly changing water params. Give them feeders until they hit around 6-7'', then you can give them a varied diet of meaty dry foods. They are fast growing and sometimes aggressive, especially orinos.

-With the questions of substrate and lighting :D THAT is completely personal preference.. Especially since MOST likely you are not buyin wild specimens..

-Also with what you will most likely be purchasing if purchasing locally, water conditions are pretty simple too. That of your tap is good for NON WILD fish.. as most of the fish that are purchased at your lfs are NOT going to be wild..

-On top of that your P-bass are going to be more hardy than an Oscar so.. no worries there..

-As for tank size.. and remember EVERYTHING i just typed is MY OWN personal opinion :D
But anyway the bigger the better :) SO if you can go larger than 300-450 that would Obviously be your best bet :) THough Right now mine are in a 250 at very minimum for 2 years from now :)

You should receive plenty of replies so have fun :D

My Gar tried Eating My P-bass till the passed 8" :D

MY p-bass also eat flakes, and worms :) My Gar eats Worms, Krill and Brine shrimp :)

LOL I feel like a broken record! :)

I keep all my young (under 6") In close to 90 degree temps. They just do better (I think) and they never get ich! I also add half the dosage of salt to the tank. I think it's a tablespoon per 10 gallons.

As far as how many to keep in the 180... I'd get about 6 babies and grow them out to around 6" and keep the best two or three. They will out grow that 180 within two years... Keeping cichla for life needs around a 400+... IMO...

Filtration... do the biggest and best you can afford! I think that goes for all fish...

Decor... thats up to you man! Driftwood will help the pH stay lower though! :)

Lighting... I feel that natural lighting is the best to bring out color... but you can use whatever....

Water chem.... pbass will do fine in all ph's... I keep mine around 6... I also feel that the lower pH will bring out the better color... The rest of the stuff is pretty basic for all fish... Oh and soft water also help with color IMO...

As far as tank mates go... pbass grow an inch a month until around 8-10 inches... so just find other fish that will grow as fast...

Food... I prefer feeders... fatheads or shiners. I gut load them with a high quality flake food and then feed to the cichla. If and when I run low on feeders... then I feed shrimp or scallops... but that is not their main diet...
