Hello MFK,

Just stopped by one of my LFS which I usually don't go to due to it being geared more towards small pets rather than fish. I stop by every once in a while to see if anyone has left a gem behind and recently I may have found one. I noticed a fish which looked like a Caquetaia Krausii a couple of days ago and haven't stopped thinking about it. Although it looks like a krausii I am not 100% convinced. Maybe someone can help me out. The guy called it a Golden Thunderbird ... yeah right, How's that for a common name? He wanted 65 bucks for the girl and had just sold the male and happened to have babies as well. At 2.99 for 1" babies I decided to grab the biggest one in the tank. I'm on the fence as to what this fish is. Either way I like the way it looks and will more than likely be keeping it. I've always wanted a basket mouth with the Krausii being my favorite over the Myersi.
Here are the pics from my phone. What are your thoughts?

Yeah, the big one is definitely stressed. It's the stressed colors that are making a positive ID difficult. I ended up grabbing one of the little guys and gave him his own 20 until he packs on another two or three inches.

I dont know about it being a Kraussi. How big is it? Here is mine at @ 3 & 4". Other than the mouth, I really dont see much resemblance.

Maybe it is seriously stressed and malnourished. The Kraussi has the jewels on each side of the head and on the jaw. Plus they are more football shaped. Yours looks more elongated.

Thanks, Shawn. It's 5" and It defnitely looks nothing like that. Great looking Krausii by the way. Mine may just be a hybrid of sorts.

It's a stressed kraussi. You can see where the opercular spot will show when it's not stressed out. I think that's what you mean by "jewels". You can also see the same caudal spot and body spot. The white substrate isn't helping either.

Thanks, Bud. I'm under the impression that the large one at the LFS is possibly undernourished as well as stressed. I'm gonna wait it out and put some meat on this little guy. He looks alot like the juvenile Krausii I have seen online. However, there are some small differences in finnage but only time will tell. I've got my fingers crossed.

I've always been a Central American cichlid guy but the smaller Caquetaia fascinate me so I'm happy I got a hold of something in that complex.
