Hi to all, been fascinated to bichirs for quite a while now and decided to get my first ones a couple of months ago (already have 6 different types on a 75g tank). From al the reading ive done, it has come to my attention that several lower jaw species have been x bred and wanted to know if what ive got was correctly categorized by my lfs. Below are the pix of the ones in concern.

1st: quite shy, loves dark corners, never seen eating till now, just notice a small bulge in its tummy after a week so i know its been eating...

2nd: this one is not shy at all, heavy eater when light goes off

Thanks for the input guys, here is what i got them for...

1st one i bought as an Ansogii, got it for around $45 (coverted) at 6 inches, currently its still around that size since it hardly eats

2nd one is an endli, got it for $16 (converted) at 5 inches, now at 6 inches

A few questions since im new...

1. How do you know if its a captive bred or wild caught?
2. How do you know if its x bred? Ex. Endli x lap, endli x ansorgii
- also noticed that an endli has been a basis for all x breed lower jaws, why?
3. Is x breed different from hybrid?

Hope you guys shed me some light...

usually when you look at the stripes of the fish or look at the snout or other physical traits that in a wild caught specimen would be better.

usually you tell if it's crossbred because it will either have the same traits as both the parents (and will look different from a true bred) example broken strips different snout shape etc..,

I do not understand what you meen by x breed i assume what you meen is when you see for example endli x angsori you think it's an x breed. If thats the case then it meens the same thing but instead of saying a "endli and angsori hydrid" we just say endli x angsori

Looking at the head shape, how do you tell if its cb or wc? Placement of eyes? If you say rounder, how do you look at it, from the side or top?

Its kind of hard to explain the difference between wild caughts and captive breds. But if you have seen a WC and a CB fish live, pretty sure you'd be able to tell the difference immediately. To me the most obvious trait would be the head shape. They really look snake-like on wc specimens while the cbs have more of a frog shaped head.

As for X breed and hybrid, its technically the same. I'm assuming "x" is short for "cross" so its like saying a specimen is cross breed which is just the same as a hybrid, a mix of two different species.

Where'd you get that sweet ansorgii x endli btw? :)
