The more I look through photo's the more I think this may be a juruense and not a tigrinus - he's about 6-7" in length.

Can some one explain to me which they think it is, why they think that, and what the major differences are between the two at this size?

Thanks.

believe it or not, that is actually a tig and not a jurenese. The streamers are generally not that long jurenese. Also jurenese are much darker with bigger eyes. Where tigs have that very clear white and black pattern with the beady eyes.

As for the sizes i think they are very similar. Around 24" i believe. but im not as familiar with the tig as the jurenese, so it may be a smaller fish.

Good to know, I'm just trying to ensure there wasn't a mix up with the vendor - he's a very reputable guy and I trust his judgement. But I know next to nothing when it comes to catfish, and the photographs I've seen of juvies show a lot more uniform zebra striping in tigs.

Can I expect the striping to become more uniform in this guy with age, or is it just an oddball pattern?

I've also noticed juruense seem to have a more dull white, almost brownish color to them whereas the tigs are more vividly colored like this guy is.

I've done all kinds of searches trying to use various key terms on this site to find a comparison write up between the two but it doesn't look like it exists yet, and planetcatfish.com is a nightmare to navigate.

If anyone has a spare moment to educate me, I'd really appreciate it - he's only out when the lights are off in the tank and while I haven't seen him eat, I've dropped several hikari massivore pellets in his area before bed that are gone in the morning.

The only other tank mate is a large black arowanna, and I'm going to assume it's not going to the substrate to peck for food.

Thats a tig the main difference is there color Jurs are much darker in color they are purpleish with black stires while tigs are white with black stripes

The pattern will change little as it grows the stirpes will become ore diffined but it won't get more stripes or have them strighten out it still looks good though

It will probably be a little shy but it should become more out going they love strong current so if you provide a spot with alot of curret it will most likely spend its time there and might not wan't to hide as much

For food i would try blood worms, shrimp,Krill and fish fillets but if it will eat pellets that is all ways good

he spends most of his time just below a 1200 GPH powerhead underneath a peice of driftwood cave I've made for him. Swims all over the tank when the lights are out.

Yeah Tigs are more nocturnal then jurs but it should become more out going with time
