Caught a bunch of smooth hounds today loaded with these. What are they and can the reproduce in a closed system.

it kinda looks like some sort of parasite

Copepods. Yes, and they can get nasty quickly.
Physically pulling them off works for adults. But the other life stages are palegic, so you'd need to take them out with something harsh (Dylox comes to mind first). It prevents them from making it to the next stage of development.

Did they rebuild the road? Are you now doing a smoothie system? Hope all is going well. I don’t know if you remember but we pulled a few of them of the smoothies u gave me and I put them directly in to my main system. I never had a breakout of them or anything else, maybe just the beneficiary of stupid luck.

Jay,

I totally forgot about pulling them off yours. Now that you mentioned it, I do. I guess I pay more attention the the ORVs And I think they have always been clean. I wonder if they pick these up while resting in the bottom.

I went down the catch them for someone, but threw them all back because of the parasites. The ORVs have moved out and the piked will be moving in soon.

Yes, the road is fixed, at least until the next nor eastern. I would say about 1/3 of the mile long road had washed into the marsh. impressive damage from Irene.

My architectural / engineering prints are done. Now I'm the process of designing the lagoon and putting it out for bid. I'm going back and forth between a poured concrete pool with acrylic front wall or a liner pool with windows, like what Josh has.

do you have a permit to collect??? because i would love to get 1 when i get my big tank up and running haha...i didnt know if i could just waltz down there and grab one somehow and transport it back to michigan...

oooohhhh i wish : /
