Hey wuts up, I have a young bat ray that is about 1 foot long, fin to fin. I know this sounds strange but he occasionally gets a veiny bubble coming out of his anus. ha anus... But seriously, I've been noticing this when I feed him. It gets large and then small again, almost like a pulsating balloon. ha pulsating. But really, what is this and should I be concerned? This only lasts for 5 to 10 minutes and then its gone. I have been unable to find out why this is happening. Please help.

It's called prolapsing. Not a good thing. Usually a sign of some kind of trauma or stress. Has be been passing fecals alright?
What kind of temps are you keeping him in?

The temperature has been between 74-78 and he has been passing fecal perfectly fine and has been eating great. Besides sticking his head out of the water, which they always seem to do, everything seems to be normal. My nitrate levels were high for a little while but I have brought them back to a normal level. High nitrates were not due to infrequent water changes, I had too many bioballs in my sump which caused the levels to rise. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I would try to keep the temp down around 70, maybe a little lower. When I had bat rays they seemed to do ok at higher temps but seemed to breath really hard and look uncomfortable. Plus I feel that many for the cooler water sharks and rays can handle the warm temps if everything else is perfect but the minute something goes wrong they don't seem to recover all that well in warmer temps 75F+. I found too that my bat rays did much better in groups rater than alone. Just a couple of things to think about.

thanks man much appreciated......do u know anything about the prolapsing problem or will it just go away??

x2 to everything Josh wrote. Get that temp down first, then see what happens. If it comes and goes, it should figure itself out when the temp goes down. I've seen the same issue in other species of rays that get too warm (especially in Southern rays and cownose).

He's talking about actual bat rays, not the 'batman' deformity found in some freshwater rays. ;)
