Can anyone recomend a check valve that isn't a flimsy piece of crap? I have gone through 3 of the Petco ones in a month. Simply trying to take the air line tubing off snapped two of them, and I accidentially bumped the other and it snapped off.

Are there any made of metal, and not cheap plastic?

These are rock solid and bullet proof. I use them in pressurized co2 setups for my planted tank. Although I'm not sure if they may cause too much back pressure for a normal air pump. You should ask these guys to avoid damaging your pump

Why do you need a check valve? In most cases, there is a foolproof way to prevent backflow without having to worry about mechanical failure.

Every thread I have read regarding the DIY overflow detailed in the sticky says it is necesary.

It's not backflow that is the problem, it is used to get air bubbles out of the system

If there is another way, I would love to know it.

is this for a diy overflow?

edit: NVM. missed that. Jose's should work. most people hook that airline to the venturi on a powerhead.

I thought it was for the return from the sump.

Stupid question, but does this have to be a "check valve", or could really any valve work? I am finding it much easier to find brass valves, that aren't check valves. I know water flow would be consitant, but I have it connected to an aqua lifter that is just cycling it back to my sump anyway.

You can just run an air line back into the tank with no valve if you want
