I have a great little 5.5" female Midas/RD. I've always wanted a male but she's growing on me and I'm considering keeping her.

At what size do females slow down their growth? The only open tank I have right now is a 40g breeder and I want to know how long she'd be comfy in there before I need to upgrade. Right now she's growing like a weed at 1" per month. Thanks!

"She'll" slow down at about 8". A 40 breeder will suffice for a few months(6), as long as you have an upgrade planned. A 125 would be perfect. Keep up with the water changes and don't feed to much.
It looks like a male to me, however it's stomach throws me off. Get some vent shots....:)

Here's a thread where I asked for venting opinions. Female was the general consensus.

I guess my question is.... it if often said that fish such as JD (which max out around 10-11") do fine in either 40g breeder or 55g. Would the 18" depth be better for a female midas than a skinny 55g? Or should I sell the 40g and just get a 75g?
well you and your fish would be much happier with a 75 gallon so if you can afford it then thats what i would do. plus you could add a couple other fish in with her if you wanted like a salvini. most rds ive kept dont bother fish that are piss ants compared to them. so i think you do something like that.

(Most) of my females slowed down around the 5-6" mark and I keep 7 midas/devils in a 130gallon. Planning on getting rid of most of them soon though. Surprised yours is still growing that quickly.

There are a few factors contributing to her fast growth... She's alone in her tank so she has no stress or competition for food, and also I feed her like a horse lol. She gets three meals a day until she's stuffed.

Okay, I guess I'd better start hunting for that 75g...

of you want a male that bad why not search for a 125 and get her a male creamsicle? just a thought.

That is the question. :) I've been looking for a sexed male creamsicle forever, and have even grown out some Petsmart babies. They're always female unfortunately....

I do crazy water changes on my tank and feed high quality foods but I only feed them once every night. Too bad you don't live by me, I have way to many midas right now I'm trying to get rid of.
