Well, I've thought about it long and hard and I've decided that I want to keep a pair of dwarf pikes. I think I have settled on Crenicichla Regani over Notophthalmus because of the larger size and availability. Anyway, I would really like to create a biotope but I can't find specific enough information on where they come from to figure out which fish to keep with them. I would like one or two schools of tetra and maybe a cleanup crew. I've also though about adding one or two more fish to the mix just to keep things interesting. I plan on housing them in a 55g. Any advice on keeping these fish or suggestions as to which fish would work the best and be the most authentic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Cr. regani has a huge natural range (and I suspect it will soon be divided up into multiple species) ... so depending on which varient you receive, the biotopes will vary quite a bit. For example, a Tapajos regani would appreciate higher temps and lemon tetras as a schooling fish versus a Rio Mamore regani which would appreaciate cooler temps and could have like seprae tetras as mates.

I've kept my dwarf pikes with various dwarf cichlids as well, Cr. regani would do well with like curviceps (for the amazon race) or dosigera (for the Mamore race) and others.

Not all places put the river with the name though, which is a shame. I know at least 3 online guys who recently all had Tapajos regani ...

Is there a certain strain that tends to be more colorful? If so I would like to try to find that one. I've seen some that were a little dull and then others that shown a lot of yellow and blue.

I like compressiceps but I'm afraid they would be too aggressive for what I'm looking for. I do think I'm going to go with a school of Serpae though and maybe some rummynose tetra (I hear they school good). Thanks for all the help. Any additional advice would be helpful.

Rummy nose tetras are great schoolers, but, they are slender and fit easily in a pike's mouth, even a dwarf. Don't be surprised to see them start disappearing.

ummm my comp didnt eat any tetras when i tetras in my tank. the hrp's did tho. the comp didnt even attack anything that didnt want to fight him first.
dont get me wrong. if something picked a fight with him over his territory he would puff up and warn them quiet abit before he would attack. my lil male is a beauty. i love him imma change my 29 into a tank strictly for him. just wait till i get it all nice guys ill post some pics. but i think a pair of compressicus would be beautiful i wish i could find mine a female.
but for tetra's i got large bodied ones. orange neons and harlequin's that were larger than 1 inch and they schooled really nicely across my 55. i had 2 schools of 7 each. but then 1 day i did a large water change and took my filter caps off. and it sucked a bunch of them up..... ooops heh. but thats what they were in there for.
the harlequin ones i had, have black n white horizontal stripes on their tails.
just given u a lil insight like u asked for

I'd love to see any pictures if you have them. I'm not 100% on anything yet. I just really like the idea of a dwarf pike pair and would love to add a tank to my lineup.
