I have a 180 gallon tank(6x2x2) running with two eheim 2217's,fine gravel substrate with larger stones and driftwood. I love CA cichlids and want to stock it with them. I want to put as many as I can but with so many fish and attitudes that will be impossible. I know the scientific names have changed but I am leaning towards the Viejas(Brehordi,Argentea,Synspilum) I also like the Sp. Isletas and Sajicas. I would like to add a mix of medium to smaller CA's. I plan on using the smaller CA's and giant Danios as dithers. What are some stocking suggestions you would recommend? There is a source for me to get the fish I want but they are about a 5hr drive. Thanks in advance,Roger.
Here is a list of what is available for me.Chuco Micropthalmus 1"
Vieja Argentea 1"
Thoricthys Sp. "Mixteco Blue" adults 2m3f
Thoricthys Aureum 1"
Nanoluteus 1"
Thoricthys Maculipinnis Young adults
Hericthys Pearsi
Paraneeetroplus Gibbiceps(few)
Honduran Red Points
Rainbow Cichlids(nice!)
Vieja Breidohri
Vieja Regani
Texas Cichlid pair(wild caught)
Dovii
Managuense
Amphilophus Sp. Red Isleta(red headed barred midas)
Sajica

I would 1st decide what you like:pairs breeding, big predators,a lot of movement, peaceful or some other combo.those you listed have many possibilities.pearsei, are big kind of mellow.red istas, jag or dovi would evenually rule the tank, probably would not allow tankmates.you could buy a group of 6-8 of the same species and get a large breeding pair....

I would do a crazy stock with lots of different cichlids. The only problem is that it would be better in a larger tank. 180s are big but not quite big enouf to have tons of large fish. If you did do that I would get at least 1000 gallons of filtration.

I am also looking to do something like this in my 220 I'm getting. And I am for sure getting some festae.

Whatever cichlids you go for, take a serious look at your filtration. Two 2217's for a 180G is nowhere near enough IMO
