Why hello again everyone!

I am at this point in time going to be getting a custom 220 Gallon Freshwater fish tank. However I am trying to figure out the best way to add the filtration system. I was not looking into nor do I really want a sub-pump system. I was thinking about going with a 3 seperate canister system. I noticed a company called Nu-Clear that I was really getting pumped up for (yes I made a funny). But they are all out of stock and they cost around $700. What brands do you all suggest to go with?

Thank you all for being amazing!!!
Cyrus :)

Hello Cyrus. I highly recommd running a eshopp or clear for life bio filter sump. But if you must go canisters then Fluval FX6 is the way to go. These things has a flow rate of 500gph so with 3 that should put you close to 1500gph. The best time to buy this filter is on Black Friday.

The FX6 are ok, but for price they leave a lot to be desired for. Definitely only ever get them on sale. Also, most if not all companies over exaggerate their filter ratings. The only way they can possibly get advertised flow is completely empty. Fluval seems to be one of the worst exaggerators of their products. Not to mention their products, by design, have a ton of bypass. Just take a look at aqua clears/c series. Also, their 06 and newer 07 are the worst by far when it comes to bypass.

While I have not used them I have heard good reviews of Ehiem filters.

I have a pair of FX4s on a 125. Cleaning is a PITA so be aware of that. They do a good job, self purge air every 12 hours, will self prime and restart on power outage. Just have to be careful with maintaining them and have spares of the common parts incase you break something and don't have to run out and get a replacement or wait for it's delivery.

What is your planned stocking lvl? If a single big fish I would use 3x AC110'S across the back, clean one a week, takes 5 min

Personally not a can fan but I'll weigh in nonetheless.

If it was me and i was set on canisters, i would go with 2 fx6 with foam prefilters over the intakes. That would be more than sufficient for your 220 imo. On sale you can pick up 2x fx6 for around 500 usd maybe.

That being said I'll back up jex's suggestion of the multiple ac110s. When you break it down, 3 ac110s will cost half as much as 2x fx6s. I also prefer a good hob like the ac110 to any can. Much more versatile, maintenance friendly, less risky, and all around more effective imo.

I know you said no sump but it would behoove me to not inform you that for half of that 700 you could rig up one hell of a sump, especially since its a custom build.

i would do a sump with something this big...but if i had to... id probably do three big canisters (your choice which ones)
but id probably stuff two with bio media only, and the third with just mechanical an maybe some denitrification ,
then (just coz i love my sand filter) id maybe push some of that output through a fluidized sand bed.
just my 2pence...have fun building it

Have you given thought to using a matten filter setup or a corner matten filter setup? I've been thinking of setting up my next large tank in that way.

As this is a custom tank, why don't you build a drop /side filter into one end? Can be wet/dry or submerged filter.
