Here is my set-up. I have no idea how to adjust my skimmer for proper collection. Can someone please help me? and should I have my powerhead running while the sand is settling?

I say no on the powerheads. I would run an hob with a filter pad to help pick up some sand... one that you dont care about since its going to be abrasive to the impeller.

Im going to read up on that unit and see what I can figure out about adjustment.

Im editing as I go along....

The first thing I read is something that really bothers me. They use a rio pump to fill the fuge. Replace it with another powerhead not made by rio. Rios will and do spill their guts into the aqaurium when they die. It has happened to at least two reef club members that I know of, and reeked havoc on their tanks. Marinelands powerheads are underpowered but reliable. Just match up the flow rates.

Line items 6,7, and 8 will help you adjust your skimmer. Link to the pdf file.

Fortunately, the pump is an acella. Apparently it was replaced when the previous owner bought the unit. He didn't like the rio's too.

BTW, thanks heathd !!

No problem.
