I bought a 240 gallon long and I have a 40 gallon breeder to build a sump out of but have never built a sump before. Could anyone please give me a list of the things I will need to get. Like which pump and pump size I will need to get. Any help is greatly appreciated

Some one will chime in.
Need more details, what kind of fish, how heavy of stocking, what's your handyman skills.
Glass or acrylic.
How much cash is available?
I like lots of mechanical filter socks, algea scrubbers, and fluidised bio filter. Lots of diy vs paying for store stuff.

I'm going for an umbee pair. I just ordered 8 two inch umbee's and hoping for a pair. I'm a mechanic/electrician for Schlumberger so I consider myself pretty handy with my hands. I make pretty decent money but prefer the cost not be insanely high. It will be a glass tank with built in overflows

If you already have the tank, measure the diameter of the holes that are drilled in the tank, the number of holes and where they are placed on the tank.

It may be helpful to post a few pics of the tank to show where and what type of overflows it is using.

All this assumes the tank is already drilled and equipped with factory overflows. I was unsure if it is or if you are asking how to DIY an overflow style aquarium.

I bought it from glass cages. It has two overflows both with two holes. It's the first tank I've had with overflows. I've always used canisters up till now

We can't recommend a pump size without knowing the diameters of the holes and whether your overflows are internal or external.

Where are the overflows located in the aquarium and are the holes on the bottom, back or side of the aquarium?

A picture is worth a thousand words, please post a few!

If it's factory it's internal and bottom drilled. My guess is either 1" or 1.5".
To op I'd look up a full syphon design and as for the 40b I'd look for say a 75g. Will the sump be seen or hidden? Or do you care what it looks like? Sump directly under the tank? Or in a different room? What D deeda said is true without hole size it's hard to recommend a pump. If you do a traditional durso style overflow and you have 1" pipe you could use a pump that returns around 1200gph 600gph/pipe. If you do syphon on the same size you could just about double it safely. Pics and size would help.

Posts 4 - 10.

We need to know the drain size, the size of the holes in the overflow boxes. Pictures of the tank would be great.

I'd want a bigger sump than 40 gallons. I'd want a sump big enough to hold 4 7X16 filter socks, and two submersible pumps. I don't think all that would fit comfortably in a 40 gallon tank, but I could be wrong.

So i actually have a 240 long with a 40g breeder sump... you need a bigger sump. My post is still on here somewhere, but the short is

3 x 1" drains in back
2 x 3/4" dual outlet returns
2 x rio 3100 pumps( i think) 1200gph total
1 x 40g breeder split for mechanical, heater, fluidized k1, return chamber.
1 x fluval 204 (had it around) (obviously not included in sump lol)

It all runs great as long as the power doesnt go out... if the power goes out i have a large living room pond! The water level needed to run properly is too great for the volume left in the sump and it overflows as the tank drains into the sump. 70g would be minimum 90g to 100g would be ideal.
