I need help with my niger catfish. I recently moved all my fish from a 135 to a 210 and after two days in the new tank noticed what appears to be a large skin infection in two primary areas developing (displayed in the pics below). The tank conditions are fine. I basically took all the water from the 135 and added it to the 210 with an additional 40 gallons of water, resembling a water change of sort. Filters, heaters, etc are all the same. The only difference is the tank itself and the new substrate, which was switched from sand to river rocks.

The other fish in the tank seem to be dong fine. They are all very active and eating. Here is the stocklist:

4 Monoculous Peacock Bass (6"-11")
2 Temensis Peacock Bass (10"-11")
5 Silver Dollars (4"-5")

Here are the water parameters/tank conditions:

Temp = 85*F
Ammonia = 0.0
Nitrite = 0.0
Nitrate = 0.2

I plan to continue with my normal water change routine, which will result in a water change in two days.

Here are some pics of the skin problem and catfish:

I have only had this cat for 3 weeks after my Dad gave him to me when he became too small for his tank. So, I am not too familiar with him, but I have noticed he has been acting strange in the new tank. I found him one day in a vertical, head-up position in the corner.

Any advice provided would be very helpful. I don't know very much about catfish and kind of only took this guy on because I had a bigger tank. I like him however and want to make sure he is ok because he is my Dads fish. One thing to note is that whatever treatments I need to give him need to be ok for the rest of the fish as I have no hospital tank. So let me know what I can do. I salt an ok idea with these guys? Or will that hurt them as it doesn some cats? Is Melafix the skin medicine that you give fish for skin probs, and is this ok for cats? All your help is very much appreciated; thanks MFK!

Those are heater burns !

Put a guard on the heater - add a little salt to the tank and keep a close eye on water quality - the burns will scar but should heal fairly quickly

Thanks, did all that. Is there any length of time I should keep the salt in the water? Does he have problems tolerating any long-term exposure? Thanks again.

my little sun catfish got these marks once, but its totally healed now.
he learn the lesson and never get to close to the heater anymore
