By January ill have atleast a 240 gallon tank and all I have for stock right now is a silver arrowana and motoro stingray so I'm looking to get a couple more fish and a Gar is on the top of my list along with 2 or 3 peacock bass, datnoids, and maybe a black arrowana so I need a Gar that doesn't get to huge and won't bother any of those fish.

This topic has been discussed numerous times before and has been brought up within the past few weeks; the most recent thread on this topic is still one the first page of threads for the "Gars & Bowfins" sub-forum.

The gar experts, e.g. people who study gars in a scientific capacity, are the ones who make the recommendation to avoid such a combo. We often get those people who like to give the old, "The experts know nothing! I'm going to talk out my rear now! [Insert series of completely incorrect statements]." and then either never return or come back to say that the experts were 100% right after learning the hard way. :D Besides, citing YouTube videos as valid sources for how the gar & arowana combination works out would be like a scientist citing a statement by a four-year-old on the topic of quantum physics as a valid source for a scientific paper.

Hi, I was looking at buying an alligator gar to house with my silver arowana, is this a bad idea? Arowana is about 6 inches, not sure on the gar quite yet. 75 gallon grow out tank. Can these 2 be kept together?
bad idea.... next...
People have Gar with Aro on YouTube I don't c y not. Must be great to keep gars cause CAli can't..
Well if it is on Youtube it must be correct.... Youtube after all is always correct and a great source of detailed information........ Right? No need to have anything like input of those experienced in such things involved in these things.. It's on youtube so it just has to work and will work... So yeah just go right on and try that out... Youtube vids say it's all good so go for that if it is your choice.

So in short, gars and arowanas do not mix well in almost all cases!

Yeah,Xander said that arows, especially silvers, are on the aggresive side and might scare the gar thus causing broken backs...

Really, I feel like I've seen videos of this stock working before ill try to find some

You tube have a lot of evidence of aliens within us.
It's hard to accept the truth. But the people here are people studying this fish species. You might not know how dedicated they are to the gars.

This questions had been answered millions of time before. You are lucky that wiggles even bother to answer you.
Anyway, the advice is no, but you can go ahead and try. It's your fishes after all.

Just a clarification: I myself do not study gars; the two people that I know of that study gars are Solomon (E_americanus) and Richard (Pejelajarto). I merely read and reread the information that's posted by them as well as other more experienced members and then compile it for future use.

there maybe a few(or maybe 1, because I only know 1) member of this site keeping gar with arowana with out problem. But the tank size is far more than what you have here! that 240G is not even enough to house 1 adult silver!

Usually Gars will not work with arowana's
So if you really want a gar i would recommend removing the arowana or it could lead in serious ( if not deadly ) injuries
But there are really no true gars that would live happily in a 240 without breaking it's back since they smallest gar is the spotted which grows to 30 inches.
If you are looking into keeping a gar to just grow out in that tank then i would go with the cuban gar or tropical because they are beautiful fish.

p.s sometimes gar's do work with aro's
i know a guy who has an asian arowana with a tropical gar
