Im looking into a new rod but i have no clue what i should get.

my area i most fish for alittle of everything. Crappie, largemouth, strippers, panfish. But IL fish are farily small.

I was thinking of a medium heavy action rod. But i dont know how to choose how long. Any suggestions for the name.

Fished all my life, but the way i was taught was to go to the store and bend it and see if it was good.

my other rod, that i use most is, if it matters, is a shakespire 6ft ugly stick with a sienna 4000FD

Any extra info if apreciated.

Ive done my fair share of fishing for each of the species youve listed plus a few more and the most versitile rod ive found is a ugly stik striper rod. They have a very sensitive tip yet a strong backbone for battling large fish or a strong hookset. There white in color so there great for night fishing. Alot of rods out there are made for a specific type of fishing (mostly bass) and you cant crappie fish with a 6'6 ft med bass rod. I use the striper rods for everything from trolling with downriggers to bass fishing. I have 2 of these rods rigged for bass fishing, one with a Revo SX and the other with a Team Daiwa Zillon. I have in total 16 of these rods all different lengths for different species.

The penn power stick eight foot is a good spinning rod. Its rated for 12-20lb 1/4-2oz. I guess it is a bit long for crappi and blue gill but its a good striper and catfish rod.

Actually not long enough for crappie, the shortest of my crappie rods is 9ft. The long rods are great for casting very light jigs a long distance. My boat is setup on the front for spider rigging which uses rod as long as 16ft.

to be completely honest the Shakespeare Ugly Stiks like mine are phenoms in the game of fishing i mean there cheap and amazing i use them from everything to bluegill all the way up to salmon and it holds like a champ..so the rod you got is good but you could switch the reel if you wanted to a Shimano Stradic CI4 which is beast..and holds good but its pricey FYI..

Is that a boat rod though?

im just curious is their somthing wrong with use say 8 pound test on a rod thats for say 12? i assume not, but ive been wrong before.

Also would MH action be over kill? im still researching rods and having hard time chooseing action.
