I am going to be starting a planted 55 gallon tank in the coming weeks and i would like to remove the black "rim" around the top of the tank, (im not sure what the correct name of it is) has anybody done that? and if so, any helpful tips? Also, I would like to paint the back of the tank black. What type of paint is best to do that?
Thanks!

krylon fusion works good and i wouldnt take the trim off i would tape it off and leave it on

I wouldn't take it off. if you want to not have a rim buy a rimless tank.

Im using a tank that I already had, trying to save a couple hundred dollars, is there anyway to take it off or would that just lead to the tank breaking..

I think there may be a chance of the tank eventually bowing.

It will bow badly. I had a 55 a while back and i bought it used and filled it to test for leaks and found that the brace was broken and it bowed about and inch. And did not look safe at all. So I purchased a replacement from the lfs.--------------A nice tank to use that can be rimless with out worries is a 40g breeder tank.

okay well i guess ill be leaving the rim on, thanks for the help, now what kind of paint should i use for the back?

whatever you want. I use vinyl paint that you use on car interiors. it works out pretty good for me. I think it gives it a nice smooth black look to it. it's not flat black by any means though.

I used latex paint. It worked well, although it took a bunch of coats.

spray paint is the quickest and easyest... if you want a glossy black finish.. use glossy paint.. if you want a flat/matte finish.. use flat/matte paint... paint the OUTSIDE of the tank

its not the most complicated thing in the world.. cover anything you dont wait painted and do several light coats.. or if you want drips and runs do heavy coats.. basicly follow the directions on the can...

as for removing the support bracing... its called support bracing for a reason... dont take it off.. if you do.. you will nolonger have support or bracing... which means it may be fine for a while.. but at some point you are going to have a lot of water to mop up...
