Hello I need help re-designing my 40 gallon sump! I have recently bought a 135 gallon setup that came with a 40 gallon sump in the stand. This is the first time I have ever had a sump and I don't know much about them, I've been looking through many posts about sumps on this site but i can't seem to find any that are set up with tanks that aren't drilled. It is currently set up with a PVC pipe and a few elbows making a pipe going down into the sump. It came with a Laguna pump too and on it, it says 600 so I'm guessing that's 600 gph. Is this good enough? I seen the tank set up and it seemed fine but I want to have a good setup being this is my biggest tank yet. Thanks in advance for any help your willing to give I appreciate it and hopefully I can return the favor in the future!!

I have many pictures too but I can't seem to figure out how to add them. Haha I'm new to this site I have mainly just browsed :)

If this is the pump you have then I think you will be set as far as pumping capacity goes:

If your tank isnt drilled, then you can do an overflow box, there should be plenty of examples in the filtration section. To add a pic, you can click on the picture looking icon in the tool bar above where you type your messages. then you can browse and find the pics you want to insert.

ok thank you very much! ya thats the pump that i have, i was on my phone earlier i just have to emai myself the pics and then i will have them up!

Can anyone give me some advice/tips or point me in the right
Direction? I'm new to this site but everyone has to start somewhere I guess! :) looking forward to hearin your replies!! :)

I started with DIY overflow pipes and they are just a hassle. I am so much happier since I have drilled all my tanks. I would recommend that you drill your tank too. It is not a difficult operation and NOW is the time to do it, before you setup the tank!

The overflow pipe you show in the picture looks like a dubious design to me. It looks more like a straight siphon rather than a siphon based overflow. I would not be surprised if that pipe headache is the reason the previous owner got fed up with the tank and decided to sell it. I would definitely drill the tank!

okay i will keep that in mind!! i just have absolutely no clue on how to drill a tank or plumb it, or even start drawing this out haha! but i will look into it and if i can find a way to drill the tank i might just do that! it will save on the clutter of pipes or box's on the back of the tank atleast! :) thanks again buddy i appretiate it! when i figure all this out and get it done i will post some update pics!

Good luck, and feel free to post pics and ask for questions BEFORE you do anything. I did my own herby overflow design with a sump and return and learned some lessons i shouldnt have had to.

There are a lot of threads about drilling your tank and whatnot, but if you have questions more specific to your set up fire away. And I agree completely with oughtsix, drilling is the way to go, and that black pipe can be a dangerous siphon if you dont have a valve to regulate the overflow
