[FONT=Verdana,Arial,Helvetica][FONT=Verdana,Arial,Helvetica]I got this nice 14" black butterfly koi a few days ago. I noticed that it has some white bumps growing in the mouth. The fish is acting normal, eating and everything. I already did the 2.5% salt bath. I'm not sure what the fish have and need help diagnosing and treating the fish. Any input will be appreciated.
Here is a picture of the fish.

Very hard to make heads or tails from the picture. Can you try to take another? I never really had luck with salt. If your water temp is 65 degrees or higher, you could try the shot gun approach such as "Quick Cure" or Pro Form-C which is formalin and malachite green (FMG)

You can swab the sores with Potassium Permanganate paste. (can buy at pool supply or Lowes). [I do this for my koi]

If you need to "calm" him down, do 1-2 drops of clove oil in a few gallons of water, and let him wait in it for about 20 minutes. He'll "pass-out" for about 10 minutes, allowing you to easily handle him. To wake him up, hold him under water and bring his face to the outlet of your pump, allowing water to flow over his face/gills. Should wake up after a minute or so.

Good luck and keep us updated.

Thanks, I will give it a try. He's on broad spectrum antibiotic right now

From the pictures it looks like mouth rot. When I first got into koi, I had many fish get this, and I still don't know why... I did everything I do now. haha. But, I will tell you that it will take off the top part of it's mouth, and it could stop there, however, it normally doesn't and it will deform the mouth shut to the point where it will not be able to eat.

My recommendation is to use Tricide-Neo Dip, as well as antibiotic food.

Mouth rot is commonly due to over crowding, and bacteria.

How big is your pond, water parameters, what are you feeding, and when was the last koi introduced?

I have had many problems when I first started with my koi, but I have noticed a significant change in their health simply by switching to more expensive food. I feed only BlackWater Food. Growth/Color/Gold

I get my medicated antibiotic food off Dr.foster and Smith. It's made from BlackWater, which is one of the bed American Koi breeding farms in the country.

And if you're serious about koi, I would go to www.koiphen.com They have TONS of people dedicated to koi. They will be able to help you. Just be careful, sometimes people can be jerks on there.

Swabbing with PP would be a way to go, however PP does burn the Koi's skin, and if this person doesn't have much exp using PP it would be best to try another route. And Yes, PP will help it to heal by killing the infected flesh, it will just leave new flesh exposed to infection if this is water quality/bacteria related.

I wouldn't recommend PP to just anyone...

And you found PP at Lowes?! My Lowe's had no idea what I was talking about. They directed me to PVC Primer because it's purple... :screwy:
