My beautiful 10+ inch FH is not happy! I've had him for over a year and until about two weeks ago, he was just fine. I fed him two different types of pellets and a block of frozen cichlid variety food everyday, with an occasional goldfish or guppy as a treat. Then he just stopped eating - I think it's been almost two weeks now. He turns down all food and mainly hugs the side of his tank, with occasional "freak outs" or spasms. There are no signs of white spots on him or holes in his head. Had the water tested at fish store - only the tiniest trace of ammonia. Have Ammonia Neutralizing Crystals in filter now. Temperature holding at 80 degrees. About a week ago I changed approximately one-third of his water. How long can a fish go without eating? I'm worried sick about him.

Some fish can easily go up to a month unfed and stay alive, although its not healthy, i would try using a garlic additive with some medicated food, but get some more opinions first.

Prazipro.....it sounds like he got a bug from a feeder treats. Have you noticed the poo color by any chance?

You may be right. This started not long after buying some guppies at PetSmart (not where I usually buy my fish). Haven't noticed poo color (nothing in-nothing out). Would it hurt to give him Prazipro without knowing precisely what's wrong? Next problem, where to find it in the middle of nowhere. What is and where would I find "medicated food". Sorry to be so stupid, but there are no dedicated fish stores anywhere around here. I really appreciate your help.

I would suggest crushed garlic mix with food, but if they aren't eating then whats the point. Prazipro can be used as a preventive and a cure. I know of FH to be willing eaters. And to stop eating, red flags are waved. I stick to what I know, and I know prazipro works. Most local fish/ pet shops should have it.

Couldn't find Prazipro anywhere in the area, but did come up with Jungle Internal Parasite Guard. I've given him some and will continue searching (after holiday weekend) for the real thing. If any other ideas come to mind, please let me know. Thank you for your help.

Many meds can be added to food for systemic use, metro +, bifan+ both can be used together as well. Think hikari makes these you can check there site for more info

Well, I'm feeling a bit better today (and it appears that the fish is also:)). After two treatments with the Jungle Internal Parasite Guard (something you add to the water), he seemed a bit perkier today and actually ate something. I cut one of those frozen squares in quarters and he has eaten the 3 quarters I have given him today (about an hour apart). He hasn't seemed interested in eating the six goldfish that are also in there with him though. I have ordered the medication online, but it is backordered 'til next week. From what I read, however, it seems like a good thing to keep on hand. This is proving to be very stressful!!
