Hi Everyone, So I have a pet Nile monitor and I just wanted to seek for some advice because this morning when we tried to hold and take it out so it could play, it immediatly ran away and when we took it out of its terrarium, it immediatly ran away and we were trying to find it. Thank God we found it and when I grabbed it, it started wriggling around and it almost fell out of my hand when I put it back in its terrarium it was really scared and it stayed scared till I fed it some grasshoppers. Now, I know that Nile Monitors are a aggresive species and like to be alone. But I really want it to trust me and my family and be happy. I don't want it to become so untrustful that it ends up hurting someone. So I am open to anyone who has any advice and I hope everyonce has a nice day :)

Id try and hold it everyday and take him/her out of her enclosure alot until she accepts you holding him/her. Id assume its harder than a bearded dragon. Make sure not to grip or squeeze when holding the monitor make him/her feel secure but not like its trapped in ur hand this may also help also do it in an enclosed area so the lizard cant run off.
Good luck!

Thank you!! This defintaly helps because usually when I try to hold it and it wants to run I squeeze it yeah, I need to watch out for what I do But I try to hold it and pet it everyday to help it feel like i'm its friend not its enemy. Again, Thank you!! :)

Oh god. It’s way harder than a bearded dragon. A beardie is one of the nicest reptiles. I had a beardie and a Nile once. The Nile monitor is easily the meanest animal I’ve ever seen. It’s a tie between a “tame” Nile and a female water moccasin defending her nest. I don’t want to tell you that you’ll “never” tame it. But reptiles don’t really develop a bond like dogs and some fish do. You may get it to take food and tolerate being handled when it’s in the mood. Maybe. But that’s probably it. Regular, calm handling is the only way to do this. Combined with exceptional care and husbandry. A stressed Nile in cramped conditions or fed a poor diet will be extremely aggressive no matter what you do. It’s like having a pet viper. Some of them may have a gentle disposition. Some won’t want to be touched at all. And even with the gentle ones, you will have to respect the damage the animal can do at all times.
This will take a large amount of discipline and a long term commitment to raise a calm Nile monitor.
Good luck and I’d love to see photos of it and it’s enclosure.

Thanks for replying, I do know Niles are aggresive and that they are not easy to tame. But I do want to make sure it is happy. I was asking for advice on trust building but thanks anyway.

Regular handling and ideal care. Make sure it has plenty of space and feed it well. It needs a full room. Or at least a pen close to the size of a child’s bedroom. Good luck.

I’ve kept boas, an 18 foot Burmese python, a green anaconda, a savannah monitor, a green iguana, a Nile, a tegu, a uromastyx and a beardie.
I didn’t mean to offend. I’m just telling you, temper your expectations, a tame Nile is a big ask.
