An island somewhere......
I was browsing thru a lfs and notice this breeding pair of cichlids... they look very familar but I can't seem to put a name to them. (It wasn't labeled on the tank either). Can you also add some specifics to it, i.e. maximum growth size, i.d. which is male/female, what other tankmates, etc.? Sorry for the bad picture... camera phone (pretty handy creation!) Thanks.

First one is evidently a female, but I don't know what's up with the brown blotches near the dorsal fin... this makes me think that she is a hybrid of some sort, but definitely part trimaculatum. The male (second fish) looks like a trimaculatum more so, but the bars are throwing me off.

I think that somebody most likely dropped off a pair of low quality flowerhorns...
Whatcha think?

Males up to a foot or so. Females about 8 inches. Pretty aggressive, but some are mellow.

I was leaning towards Trimac hybrid also but they didn't seem to look anything like flowerhorns to me.... but anything could be possible. They're a breeding pair with a ton of fries in the tank..... just not sure.

I would say it is definatly a pair of very low qual. fh's. Mine get the same bars when they breed, except mine have way more color, and my male has a hump.

nice specimen, imo it looks like you could have a convict/festea mixed, convicts are known to cross breed with just about anything that shows interest, its body shape and red blotches right behind its gills says convict, and its overall body pattern appear to be festea/red terrer. i definately dont think flowerhorn when looking at your prize fish. :nilly:

well whatever they are, they look like hybrids.but you cant really tell with all of the glare, try using the flash or getting the pic from a different angle
