next door
went camping last year and found this in the woods(Nor cal, serria tahoe). i want to know what kind of wood it is, will it harm my fish. i would like to put it in tank (jardini and tin foil).

Not sure what kind of wood it is, but as long as you clean it well, you should be fine.
 
The red interior wood and how the exterior looks my guess would be it is a Ceder or a Juniper. When you cut it did it smell "piney"? If it did it is deffenitly a evergreen. I don't think that evergreen type wood is good for tanks, but I'm not sure about that. Ther are may great minds on here that should be able to tell you if that type of wood is safe for a tank. Hope this helps.
 
If the tree it came from had needles intead of leaves then it will have sap that will need to be "cleaned out". Looks nice whatever it is.

You nailed it. It is from the Cedar/Juniper family. Exactly which species is hard to tell without seeing the tree. However the process of elimination shouldn't be too hard by looking up which occur in N. California.

Either way, it is ok to put in your a tank. It will take a while to water log (if it will at all). I have a piece of white cedar from the border at Lake Superior, and after over three years it still floats.
