2011-09-03 18.35.48.jpgFirst pic I'm 95% sure is a Bluegill, I just want to confirm.
2011-09-03 18.36.53.jpg2011-09-03 18.37.42.jpgThis fish I believe is a Bluegill as well, but has a weird redish tint to him which throws me off.
2011-09-03 18.38.53.jpg2011-09-03 18.39.09.jpgThis fish I believe is a baby Pumpkin Seed due to the fact that he has a red ring around his eye and has very mild colors that sort of resemble a Pumpkin Seed
2011-09-03 18.44.26.jpg2011-09-03 18.34.40.jpgThis fish I have no idea. I think it is some sort of minnow or bait fish, but honestly I have no idea.

I hope you guys can help!
Thank you all in advance.

first five pics of fish are green sunfish and the last two are bluegill

First three are green sunfish, next two are dollar sunfish, and last two are bluegill.

Here's what species I think that these four fishes are:

  1. Green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus)
  2. Green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus)
  3. Orange spotted sunfish (Lepomis humlis): I'm not 100% sure on this one, but I can definitely rule out some other sunfishes. I'd Need a better picture to be sure of this ID.
  4. Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus)

Not to give you a hard time, but I just found it amusing that the two you were sure are bluegill are not, and the two you are no idea of are actually bluegill.

I agree the first two are Green, and the last two are definately bluegill, not sure about the others though.

LOL yea I noticed I made the boo boo after I wrote it. I meant to say green sunfish for the 1st two. As for every one else saying an orange sunfish, are they native to NJ? This particular one was caught in the Passaic River. And the orange sunfish doesn't seem to have the red ring around the eye as this one does. From the research I've done the only fish that has that red ring are pumpkin seed and long ear sunfish. Hence why I thought it was a pumpkin seed. The last pic I do think is a bluegill, but how many species of bluegill are there? And what species do you think this one is?

Orangespotted and northern longear ranges don't extend to NJ. I still think they look like female bluespotted sunfish.

There's only one species of bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus).

Good point about the range thing; I forgot about the fact that orangespotted sunfish don't occur in NJ.

I don't think that it's a bluespotted sunfish because it lacks the black "slash" marking that goes through the eye and extends below it. It's not a pumpkinseed because it lacks the red.orange dot that would be on its operculum (gill cover).
