bought it at my LFS a few hours ago, all they could tell me was that it is a "great white lobster". I googled online and saw that they usually go for around $30-$50 so for $19 i figured it would be a great addition to my tank as I have guppies that are top swimmers and this is basically a bottom feeder. I purchased some Veggie Rounds sinking tablets and it devoured the thing in less than a minute. Anywho, I need help identifying the species and most importantly the SEX. I googled and saw that you can tell by the rings on the 3rd leg if female, and 5th leg if male. Problem is I cant tell. I appreciate the help and thanks in advance to everyone :)

Ignore that last picture, dont know how that got there. Dont worry all i caught was a nice farmers tan that day lol.

After some googling, I am 80% sure that this is a "Cherax Quad".....as far as the sex I am not sure still. It has been fun watching it climb the plants and try to escape by climbing the air line. It didnt eat half the veggie round earlier and the guppies started attacking it and he waited till there were a bunch and ambushed them it was hilarious. Definitely has made my tank a lot more enjoyable!

update. Now I am 100% sure this is a MALE Procambarus Alleni. It has the 2 little things sticking out from under him, and since I live in florida its likely that hes a P.Alleni.

Thanks for everyones input :frog:

You are welcome! Not a lot of cray keepers around here i guess...

from the pictures it looks male to me... they can be sexed just like lobsters. theres 2 ways to sex them.

#1 the top view way is sometimes a bit harder to distinguish. look from on top males will have a narrower tail (not the end part/fanned out, but where all the swimmerettes are) than the body(thorax part) and the females will be wider
#2 looking underneath the first set of swimmerettes males have a hard pointy triangular shape and the females have flat soft and slightly rounded tip.

not sure the name of this species but i see them at lfs for about 20$

Most of the Cherax species are sexed by the rings on 3rd legs or the pointy thing by the 5th leg. This guy has neither of those, but he has 2 skinny "swimmerettes" sticking out towards his torso after his 5th legs and according to my research that is how you sex P. Allenis. If it was a female it would not have the 2 things sticking out as can be seen in the 1st picture and the one with the blue shirt in the background and instead would be 5 legs and a tail. Again, I could be wrong but that was the tiny bit of info I could find.

Curious to know if you ever found out what is was? I just got one myself and it was marked as a "ghost lobster" I thought it was some type of cherax species but I'm unsure.
