hi, i feel like a bit of a tool. i bought a protein skimmer and i don't know how to get it running. i hooked it up to my garden hose just to see how it all works and it doesn't seem to want to foam up. skimmer here....http://www.marineart.com.cn/ArticleContent.asp?ID=164&Class=External type
the instructions with the skimmer are terrible, and i've never used one before. is there a certain prime sequence you have to follow? or is there a certain lvl of water you have to maintain?
pump doesn't seem to be giving much. and the bubbles coming out of the needlewheel pump are quite big.

First is your tank freshwater or saltwater? It will only foam in salt water due to it being denser....thats why your hose didnt do anything.

Not to mention that there hopefully wouldn't be too many organic wastes coming out of his water supply. :nilly::D

I dont think freshwater is really skimmable even if there was. It might foam is there is some sort of Chems in there that foam....but skimmers are for saltwater as far as I know.

You can use them on F/W but you need alot more air and finer bubbles, search for more threads on this.

it will be for a salt tank. so maybe its not buggered after all. i'll salt up my sump and see what happens. sorry about the lack of knowledge, this will be a big learning curve (fresh to salt reef). keep an eye out for my posts in the future i'm sure i will need plenty more help.
cheers

Yeah I had kinda heard about a person or two trying to use them but never really heard if they worked or not and if they did what kind of tweaking it took. I just thought it really didnt do all that much because the water isnt as dense so the bubble were to big...but I guess I'll do a little looking to learn.

No problems on the question...going from fresh to a reef is going to generate questions! Search on here and ask questions and youll be fine.

just remember all skimmer go through a brake in proses when first set up. this could take a couple days to a couple of weeks before they start puling things out.
