i have a malawi cichlids tank, and full of rocks.. i was wondering what others do to clean up their aquariums? do you guys move around the rocks? if we move the rocks everytime we clean the tank, it's kinda hazzle, isn't it? and if don't move, we can't clean under the gravel..

OMG! i need advice.. thanks in advance..

You don't need to clean the gravel under the rocks, no waste will ever deposit there. Just gravel vac around the rocks and you will be fine...

:iagree:

Things must be way different on your planets. Currents push the stuff everywhere.

Clean half the tank each time, it makes it easier and and actually gets done more often ;). I all on the left side on odd weeks and right on the even.

I'd rather put in the extra work than have the inevitable happen.

What size tank? What kind of filtration do you have?

whatever. How does current push waste underneath rocks?? For there to be current, you need a moving volume of water. There is no moving water volume between a rock and gravel....

water can and will flow between the tiny cracks in between the gravel. therefore some stuff will get in the gravel underneath your rocks. i don't think it's enough to make a huge impact on the quality of the water though. i don't normally move the rocks around to clean, i just use the gravel vac and get all around the objects in the tank. i find that this is good enough. move them if you want to or if you are having water quality issues that can't be positively identified as coming from something else. everyone has their own way of doing things and no single way is correct or incorrect. you need to find out what works for you and your fish.

Dr Joe may not be giving the easy answer but he is giving the right one.Dirt gets everywhere.Ever vaccum under your couch?

I take all the rocks out of my 125g and clean the gravel every 6 weeks or so.Gravel vac the areas visible every week.I like rearranging for a different look and it helps break up established territories to reduce aggression.
