Over the weekend I lost my feeder colony of convicts to a broken heater. Thier tank is at my job (no room in the house) heater broke over the weekened and monday I came into work to convict soup.

Went out today and bought another pair I think are male and female. Need to make sure I'm right.

Would have posted in the cichlids forum but seeing as how they are food to me wasn't sure if they would like that.

I believe the one in the front of the second pic is a female and the one in the top (back of the second) is male.?

that's a beautiful feeder breeding pair there.
I have a female convict I'm growing out now, once it gets to bigger size I'll get a male.
what size tank you keep them in? do you just let the fry grow out in there or you move them to grow out tank?

they let you keep a tank at work?

Thanks, got them at the Aquatic Obsessions store I was telling you about JP. They are in a 10g. My other pair which was about the same size maybe a little bigger bred fine in a 10g. If it ain't broke don't fix it. However if I don't see any results in the next few moths I'll move them to a 20g. I also stopped over at Aquascape today, Sorry man they don't have much thats not on the web. Picked up my Purple Spilo too! :headbang2

Yeah I have that tank and a 55g with 3 turtles at work. The only reason we have any at all is because a co worker and I found a baby turtle (painted or painted/red ear slider hybrid)walking across the parking lot. He sort of became the company mascot (Roshi) and I have the cons there to "feed" the turtle. I really have them their for my piranha, well only one now. We ended up wuth 3 because a guy at work (against my recommendations) bought his daughters 2 red ears and had them in a 10g. When I found out about it and that they were about 4" I told him to bring them in and put them with Roshi. They are Bulma and ChiChi now... I use the 55 with the turtles as my con grow out tank.

Dude, I've been trying to breed my cons for 3 months, but they only layed eggs once, and it was eaten the next day !! good luck to you though

3 months? you're doing something wrong then. i once accidently left my tank unplugged, no heat, no filter and went out of town for 5 days, came home to eggs. These things are foolproof to breed. somethin is wrong with your set up or you bought them too small

Trust me. There is nothing wrong. Do you really think i would forget to on the filter for three months? Maybe the male is infertile. I got another male about a week ago. I check temp everyday. They live with a turtle. I change 40% water every week. Its a 55 gallon rubbermaid tub. I bought them at about 1-2". They are now >3". (1 male and 1 female), The new male is 1.5". The bigger male doesnt pick on the new male, he only picks on the female (he really hates her and i also think he dont see the new male as a threat) . Once they start fighting i might rehome the infertile male though...
