I just did a ph test for my 40 gallon and it at 8.8. My fish are breathing heavly. What the best way to lower it down? Should I do a 50% water change? I currently have two driftwoods in the tanks for about 3 weeks now. My tap water ph is 7.6.

Though your pH is high dont assume its the cause. Retest the ph in case you made an error in the test. Then test ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels. Also consider oxygen. If the fish are gasping you could have low oxygen levels in the tank. If your pH is high and its a problem you dont want to adjust it too fast either. The shock of a large change in pH could kill the fish as well.
