due to financial status from rent and stuff i gotta pay i figured that a saltwater tank would be to expensive for me at this time, so i want to get a larger tank instead of my first plan of a 30 gallon nano reef. I was wondering what would i be able to do with a 55 gallon fresh water tank. any ideas on what i could possibly stock in it i want to keep it colorful since it would be a nice thing to see in the morning(ussualy afternoon) when i wake up. id like to make a chiclid based tank but i dont think i would be able to carry many fish due the aggressiveness of that type of fish so any ideas on what i should do. All ideas are graciuos and thanks before hand for your suggestions

I have 20 beta fish that school together and its really really sweet. I think a tank of like 3 or 4 huge schools of fish would be really sweet.

other then that guaramis are pretty...

rainbow fish are sweet if you wait for them to mature.

My personal favorites though in my tank are my silver dollars
and my red-tailed black shark. so nice.

definately get some cora's (catfish) that clean the bottom theyre neat
and they help clean the tank. Most of them (if not all) breathe air not
oxygen from water so there cool because if they watch them every now
and again they dart up and get air then go back down and keep on given'er

theres so many different possibilities.

you could do cichlids .. south african cichlids are really really neat..

or you could venture to the realm of lobster and crayfish....

Id say just go to a couple fish stores check out all the fish you can and write down if they could be put in a community tank or if they are aggresive and have to be with certain fish and then weigh out what you want more. thats basically what I did. and im happy. my tanks almost complete.

im hopeing i can get to my closest fish store but the closest specialty one is 30-45 minutes away so im trying to go there this weekend but my next choice is the local petco and petsmart but they dont like me to much since i got into a agruement at both stores for keeping so many fish and snakes in cages about 3 times to small for one fish alone while they had 3 or more of them in the same tank like 5 oscar fish in a 10 to 15 gallon tank where they could barely turn around and 4 ball pythons in a 20 gallon tank where they would need atleast a 75 gallon tank at the size they were at plus a a few more different types but cant think of them off the top of my head but thanks for the advice ill try to come up with a list off some hopefulls

take your time setting the aquarium up and if you have to wait to get to the speciality fish store then wait you will be better for it in the long run. i have been here for a couple of months and on other forums for a couple of years or so and your petco and petsmart do not get very many recommendations so i suggest wait til you can get to the specialist shop. we have a store called pets at home which is like you petco/smart and i would never buy fish from them due to their appauling conditions.
if you wait i guarantee you and your fish will be better for it and you will most likely get a better quality of fish as well that will live for far longer.
are there no local fish breeders near you who may deliver for a small charge?
you could try the internet if you wait and save up a bit, if money is an issue, and get a few fish in one order for one delivery charge. dont know what internet fish are like in the states but in the UK they are excellent quality and arrive very much alive.
