Hi,

Need advice. i overfed my silver dollars, 5 out of 13 have really bloated stomach and also headstanding :( i fed them too much hikari cichlid gold pellets. , i've added epsom salt to their tank. what else can be done? i've stopped feeding.

thanks.

try feeding them peas. The frozen kind. thaw a few out then take the skin off then feed pieces to the fish. Sounds like the same problem I had. Peas helped. might work and wont hurt them.

The main thing to accomplish is reducing the number of bacteria instigating the bloat. Do a water change/gravel wash of 30-50% and replace the lost epsom salt. Do NOT feed the fish for the next 6 days. After 3 days of treatment, perform another 30-50% water change/gravel wash and replace the epsom salt. The next 3 days should show some reduction of the symptoms in the fish. On the 6th day, perform another water change/gravel wash and replace the epsom salt. If the symptoms appear greatly reduced, you can offer a small feeding once a day. By the 9th day, and water change, the fish should be well on the road to health. You should be able to forgo the epsom salt replenishment and carry on smartly.

BTW, epsom salt is the 'old school' treatment for bloat. Nowadays, the drug of choice is Metronidazole (flagyl). Your lfs should carry it. Can also be found at kvvet.com and petsolutions.com.

doesnt hikari gold have a 40% protein level??

I might sort of point my finer in that direction, i mean SD's are after all plant eaters

and high protein levels in a herbivores diet might cause or contribute to bloat.

since it occurs in malawi cichlids that are fed a high protein diets.

i know there different species but it seems the idea is the same no?

thanks for the advice :) today the bloat is less, stomach area is not so bloated. but they still have diffuculty swimming.
