hi guys i need a lil help paiting my stand should i sand the old color off or should i prime it and i wana do it black what paint is best for this type diy thank you guys
You will always want to break the gloss on the old surface for better adhesion of the new coat. 150 or 180 grit would be good.
If you want a Piano Black finish (Perfectly flat with no wood grain showing through) put a thin coat of Bondo on first and sand that out to at least 220 grit.
Wipe everything down with a rag dampened with Acetone right before painting to get any residual finger oils off.
I would spray it if you want a smooth glossy finish. Spray only one side at a time and have that side flat to eliminate runs if you don't have a lot of experience spraying.
For a less than smooth finish you could use a brush or a roller.
When I repainted all of the interior doors in my house I used Behr oil based gloss paint in a HVLP sprayer with a little thinning and it did an excellent job and has held up to 2 sub 10yo children very well. If you aren't aiming for a perfectly smooth finish it would prob do a very good job with a foam roller. It does self level quite well.
I have always had good luck with Krylon's line of products in rattle cans. It looks like your stand will take quite a few cans though.
It sounds like a surface sanding with 180 grit then wiping with acetone would be a very sufficient prep for your project. When sanding use a power sander or sanding block. This will eliminate uneven sand marks from the contours of your fingers pushing unevenly on the sand paper.
I used Rustoleum spray paint from the hardware store. I did not like the look of the black in flat or gloss but the satin black is just right and very forgiving. I went through quite a few cans on my 210g stand but it looks great!
You do NOT have to sand the old finish off. All you need to do is scratch it up so the new paint will have something to "grab" on to. I could easily prep a stand that big in 10 minutes with an orbital sander, 15 with a sanding block.
I just painted my stand black no sanding. I used zinsser bulls eye 123 primer. just wipe down the stand, paint the primer on, then paint your black paint on. I used a latex enamel flat black with sponge brushes so you don't see brush lines. It came out like new.
