can someone please help me find the right filter for m map turttle? right now he's in a 20long(i know too small but it's small and will upgrade it when it gets bigger) so need one that will work with that and maybe move along to a bigger tank when need be. but it doesn't have too. a few i've been looking at are zoo med reptiles 501 and for odd reason Tetra ReptoFilter. please let me know what will be the best filter to get.. can't spend alot of money on it right now or i would just get a canister

The model size of the canister filter will depend on the amount of water you have to filter. Basically take what ever volume of water your have and double it. So if you have 50 gallons of water find a filter that's rated for 100+ gallons. Overfiltration is key when keeping messy turtles.

I've used Fluval, Rena and Cascade canister filters and they all have worked fine for me. They're not cheap but definitely worth the money in the long run.

I would normally recommend a canister filter as well, but it might be too strong for a 20 gallon tank... Buy the smallest model there is... most brands of canisters are well built and can easily take on a 20 gallon tank.

Hi Guys.

Maybe you would like to take a look at this link:

I turn out to be in a mexican reptile forum and I did my own DIY inner filter for my turtles and has given me quite good results.

It is in spanish however it has a lot of pictures and you can see how I made it.

The total cost of it was about the equivalent to 13 bucks being the most expensive part the power head. 9 bucks.

Take a look and let me know what you guys think.

Cheers.

You could probably go with the largest of the Fluval internal filters...but the problem there is that the filter takes up a ton of space. I used it in a 20G and what I did was put it in horizontally and it fit pretty well right under the turtle dock. But in that size tank it will work, or you could use something smaller and just be prepared to do your water changes, and get something like a Fluval 405 to filter his adult tank.

I just figured that the OP was upgrading the tank soon. Either or, a Rena XP1 is rated for 45 gallons so that would work fine with a 20 gallon long.
