Hi, first of all im not sure if ive posted in the right section so appologies if im in the wrong forum. Ok so i have a juwel 400 tank with one of those built in filters, now from keeping a few different species of fish in my tank ive come to the conclusion that the built in filter, well, it just isnt up to the task, so ive decided to buy an external filter. This leaves the problem of the filter that is stuck to the side pane of glass with silicone. Id like to remove this filter but im afraid that if i start sticking things inbetween the filter and glass im gonna have a shattering experience!! This must be avoided at all costs, so i was wondering if there is anyone who has had the same problem and has removed the built in filter, and if so, how did u remove it without breaking the glass? If anyone has any ideas or sugestions id be glad to hear them. Thank for reading and i look forward to your help :)

anyone?

I have a Rio 400 and removed the internal filter.

I used the most flexible knife I could find (bread knife) and started at the end of the tank. I cut away the top blobs of silicone with the knife and that gave a bit more leverage to get the bottom ones. I have a 3d backing on my tank so the back was a pain for me, I did the same working from the top cutting away the silicone but had to use a hair dryer to loosen the blobs I could not reach because of the backing (if you do this watch the tank seal). It only took me about 15 minutes, just take your time and be careful and you will be fine. There was quite a bit of mess so i'm glad I had my other tank for the fish when I did it.

Thanks for the advice, i never thought to use heat on the silicone, i will try this at the weekend! thanks again

No problem, just don't rest the hairdryer on the tank if you are doing it with water in.
