Ok I had a leak in my FX5 canister filter yesterday. Today I took apart the motor unit and just like I suspected, the o-ring on the impeller has broken. I am going to order a new replacement o-ring but now there is a problem.

I totally forgotten how to reassemble the motor unit or where the o-rings are suppose to go. Checked the user manuel and nothing. I need help from you FX5 users. Where should they go? I added some pictures of place which I suspected the o-rings should be at.

The 2 o-rings found in the motor unit

So where should I place them? Input would be appreciated :)

And also, is the o-ring for the impeller this?

FX5 Motor Seal Ring A-20207

Or do I have to buy a new impeller to get the o-ring suited for it?

Pretty much from what I can remember offhand, the seals go around B, B goes in C, C/D fits into A, and you use four screws to seal. Not 100% on that though.

FINALLY! Someone replied :) thanks aclockworkorange. So do both seals go onto B?

I just got a response from Fluval

Fluval said:
One goes behind the flange of the impeller and sits in a groove, the other goes in front of the impeller on the orange part of the motor - it rolls around some pegs and makes a seal with the motor when the unit is re-inserted.

Im bad with those terminology. What is a flange?

I've never seen a Fluval, let alone one torn apart, but based on the above, I'll try to help :)

Not sure how to describe it exactly, but a flange is a surface that is a larger diameter than the piece it's mated to. Typically there is a sealing surface on the face of the flange.

I assume "A" is the impeller housing? Then from Fluval's reply, one seal would go there (One goes behind the flange of the impeller and sits in a groove). The second one would go on "C" or possibly "D" (the other goes in front of the impeller on the orange part of the motor - it rolls around some pegs and makes a seal with the motor when the unit is re-inserted). The o-ring should fit sort of snug. Their comment "rolls around some pegs" looks like they are referring to "D".

One question, is seal #1 in your photo "repaired"? If so, that isn't going to seal most likely. You could take the seal to Home Depot and find one identical (hopefully).

Good luck!

Nope, Im still waiting for the new seal which would be delivered tomorrow, I juse took that as a picture reference only.

The impeller is housed in the orange body. A is just a connection point for the pump to fit into the canister

B is the impeller, so does it mean the flange is the black rounded part?

Hey Spirit,

Yep, that sounds right to me! (I would have never guessed that was the impeller lol).

I do know that an o-ring seal should be sort of snug, but not stretched. If it seems like it fits correctly and makes sense that it would seal to the mating surface, then yeah, that's probably it.

There aren't any diagrams online?

Nope, the manuel is trash and google sucks. I search images and all I got was images of the box...

And yah, the impeller's design is different from the ones normally found in canisters. The large magnetic bar attached there should have gave it away

Sorry, I had to head on in to work. Where are all the FX5 geeks? I know if I had an FX5, I would tear it apart to help answer your question.

Page EN-22 of the manual shows where one seal goes:

You're right, there's nothing out there as far as a detailed view of the internals. Does the motor/impeller assembly connect to "A"? I am pretty confident that the other seal goes inside the port opening exactly where your arrow is pointing.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Good luck man!

If I had time and a screw driver to fit, I would remove mine to help him out. The screw driver part is the main issue.
