Hi I have about 8 that range from 3-4.5" now I haven't had problems sexing other carpintis but these ones are throwing me for a loop. I'm not able to get any decent pics cause the glass in that particular tank is hazy. But what I need is any tips or identifiable markings to distinguish male from female. If I was to use What I normaly would to sex by looks I would say all male but I know there has to be a couple female. So any info would be great.
Also I have 6 in 6' 100gal and no signs of pairing Just territory defense

you should be able to vent them at that size , right? . i never had to i had a pair of them but the female at about 3 1/2 inches started going inside the males area and he let her so i snatched them up to a way bigger aquarium (don't do that to a same size or smaller aquarium because sometimes they'll fight about that, all cichlids) and they spawned in 2 days .
you can try and vent but fish are all different and so are hybrids . remember that males should be pointy and females are round so if your looking at them with their head pointed in front of you then it should look like a v for male and a o for female.
i had a red texas for over a year that vented round so simple right? sold her to a member here and he called me 2 weeks later and said it had spawned , with one of his females , cool .
i always thought they were carpintis but i read that they were in a area(vontehillo) dividing escondido and chariel spawning grounds.
i will be checking the ones i have from my spawn a little later . please let us no if you had success venting them ,good luck bro

With mine the males grew faster and the females have the dark blotch that Pete is referring to. In addition, females have a more rounded head and body while males will get a sloping forehead and have a more robust build.

Ok Thanks guys. They don't have the blotch. I can sex a couple of males but looks like ill try venting tomorrow.
