Hi all, I have a bit of a problem I was hoping the MFKers could help me solve. Currently I have a cycled, bare 55 gallong long tank sitting on the floor of my apartment ready for fish. Our problem is, we don't know what to put in it.

Presently we have 4x 20 gallon tanks A) 6 x guppies, 1 x platy, 30 fry, B) 150 Rosy Barb Fry, C) Breeding Con Pair (Male 2.25 inches, female 1.75) D) 4 red glass Rosy Barbs. We also have a 33 gallon with 6 x Bolivian rams (all about 1.25 inches to 1.5 inches) 7 neon tetras, and 6 harlequin rasboras. We have a 10 gallon with 20 platy fry and a 5.5 gallon with 15 sword fry. We have a 15 gallon with 3 swords. We have a 30 gallon with mixed livebearer fry and a 27 gallon that is empty and will be used when we size sort our rosy barb fry shortly. We have a 2.5 gal and a 5.5 gal that are also empty.

Ideally, we'd like to make optimal use of our 55 gallon tank. We dont think it makes a good grow out tank because we're raising such small fish. We toyed with the idea of putting our rams in there for breeding, but the 6 of them are either unisex or are not interested in each other, or too young or something and we dont see much hope there. We know our cons will get bigger, but we're using them as feeder breeders and a 55 gal seems like overkill even for fully grown cons. We bounced around the idea of dividing the tank and getting a 2nd pair of cons, but cant come up with much else.

The tank is sitting on the floor so it's not really a tank for looking at so pretty fish and decorations arent really the path we want to go. If anyone has any suggestions for a good use of this tank or perhaps a good fish that could be bred in, and would make full use of, a 55 gallon that would be fine too. Thanks all!

Really I guess IMO if you "want to make full use" of your tank, the best way to do that is to pull it up off the floor onto a stand and do a show tank out of it. It seems you have random tanks for breeding and so on...why not have a tank thats just easy on the eyes. Id personally put a single oscar in there...there is nothing more pet like that lives in water IMO. Put him some nice decor in there and have something to really look at :)

The 33 G is the display tank. It's on a nice wooden stand, planted, rocks etc. The Con tank is also really nice to look at as is the Rosy and even the 30G growout. Even the 10 gallon with platy fry is decorated to look like a tank from a little kid's bedroom :p. I will post some pictures later on. I read that an oscar needs 75 G minimum though? Not that Id be able to convince my roomie to keep one, she hates them.

I see two JD reccomendations, what would be the reason for going with them, how many would I be looking at?

make that a third jack dempsey recommendation, you could do two in there

We're thinking now of maybe making it a con tank for mass production of feeders. We figure that way we can put some really nice fish in the 20 the cons occupy currently and also have a constant supply of live food instead of a irregular one. The question now is how many cons we could cram in there ? Id rather not have to keep getting rid of full grown cons so Im saying how many full grown cons not little itty bitty ones :).
