Hello--

I stopped by a PetSmart at lunch today and saw a 3.5" fish that I wasn't sure what it was. I don't ask the employees anymore. :(

Anyway, I've been searching online to see what it is and I can't find it. It looks like a kenyi, but it has a lot more black on it's body and a black face. The dorsal is also black with white horizontal stripes. Between the broad vertical stripes on the body is blue.

The overall shape of the fish is like a kenyi. I could pick it out of a lineup if anyone has a good link I can use to search from.

Thanks--I'm thinking of buying it, but want to do my homework first.

could it possibly be a psuedo. crabo or kenyi going through the color change? both of these are abundant at petsmart.

It's not a demonsoni. I have one of those and they are smaller and their stripes tend to alternate blue and black more evenly. I've done more research and the one I'm looking at looks more like a PSEUDOTROPHEUS MSOBO but mostly black. If that's not what this fish is, it looks a lot like it--with mostly black ill-defined stripes.

I have some msobos. The name has been changed to metriclima msobo, if you search that you might find more pictures. I have never seen one in a petstore. It may have been Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos. I have seen many low quality ones around that have the same pattern you are describing.

Might be the msobo but the m cyaneorabdos has horizontal stripes, so it can't be that. I wish I had taken a photo of it with my Blackberry while I was in the store. I think if I still like it in a few hours when I get off work, I will buy it and post a photo here for ID.

thanks!

but the m cyaneorabdos has horizontal stripes,

I know but I have seen low quality ones that have vertical stripes and have a blotchy appearance. I see these guys all the time in Walmart tanks.

Walmart sells cichlids!? I'm astonished! "Walmart is the devil"

Walmart does indeed sell cichlids. I am the furthest thing from an expert on fish and I decided I wanted a small tank with a couple nice looking fish. Since I'm 100% noob and admit I know as much about fish as how to build a space station, I went into walmart and bought a 10 gal tank, and some "cute" tiny fish. Sounds innocent enough, except that the "cute" tiny fish that I bought turned out to be Venustus and Jack Dempsey, they were all in the same tank so I didn't think anything of it, that is until I woke up one morning to find my Jack swimming happily around the dead bodies of the other fish.
Lesson learned on my part.
