I have about 11 datnoids which include IT, NTT, NGT, and AT. The 2 ATs are the only ones that are constantly stable. Everyone else are stable when the lights are off and becomes unstable when the lights are on. The lights are on 8 hours of the day. Tank is semi-bare bottom with river rocks and has a black background. I also have a couple of driftwood which are arranged in a way that they form a cave.

I read John's post saying that datnoids are more stable in a tank with blue background. Unfortunately, a blue background will mess up the whole "theme" of the tank which is basically black themed.

By the way, they are well fed and spoiled with a 50-60% water change every 3-4 days.

Should I rearrange the driftwood in a way that it will no longer be a cave? What else can I do to help them become stable.

Any suggestions?

it maybe due to the bare bottom tank i have seen NTT go mad on a bare bottom tank when they can see their reflection this maybe why they turn unstable when the lights are on

I agree with T1k. Also the "black theme" isn't helping. Small Dats will try to blend into their surroundings.

Its semi-bare bottom. I would say that about 70% of the total bottom panel area is covered by river rocks.

This is my second tank with a black theme. Two of my original datnoids came from the first tank. Those two were always stable then. A couple of months after the move into the new tank, they became unstable.

By the way, their size varies from 3.5 - 6"

I am not too keen on changing the theme of the tank though... datnoids are very unpredictable indeed like Johnptc said.

I am baffled...

getting tigers stable is the luck of the draw

i have black background and my 3 tigers are stable all of the time

ST always stable you could take him out of the tank kick him around a bit put him back in the tank and he would still be stable

NTT thin bar stable 90% of the time loses color when you do a water change

NGT he was totally black in the shop put him in my tank within 10mins he was totally stable even tho their was 7 x aros and a ST big enought to eat him he was a bit shocked at the size of the other fish at 1st then after 1 week he was up the front glass with the other fish at feeding time

getting tigers stable is not easy some will always be unstable

I would try losing the driftwood and leave the lights on like 12hrs or more. I know some ppl who leave the light on all the time 24/7 to stablize their dats. They claim it works, but I have yet to try it out for myself.

I've tried having the lights on for 12 hours but it didn't do the trick. By the way, I forgot that the NTTs are also 100% stable although their bars are a little bit washed out.

I agree with the luck of the draw though. Its a hit or a miss with datnoids regardless of how much or how less they eat.
