Me and my dad are going to be building a wooden stand for a 125g tank but we cant seem to agree on the design. I think my dads design wont be strong enough but he seems to think my design is unnecessarily strong.

He thinks (4) 2x4's and a 3/4" piece of plywood on each end will be strong enough. My idea was to use (2) 2x4's on each corner plus a total of (4) 2x4's throughout the middle for a total of (12) 2x4's holding up the tank. Plywood would be used to cover the wooden skeleton on top bottom and all sides. Lateral support would be made up of 2x4's on both designs.

So now im crying out for help or better yet a blueprint so we can put this arguing to rest. Any ideas and suggestions would be appreciated as well.

For my 125 i made rectangles for the top and bottom with the 2x4s on edge used 2x4s for the 8 uprights:one in each corner, 2 every 2' on the rear and 2 at 18" off the corners in front(this is the spacing I needed for 2 18" doors). Since the uprights were on the interior off the base and top, I attached 2x4s to the face of the uprights so that the weight of the stand is supported by these 2x4s and not the screws. To wrap the stand I used wainscoting slats with a 1x4 at the top and bottom so that it resembles the pine stands being sold that way I didn't need to spend money on a lot of decorative trim to dress it up since its in my living room. I also recommend glue on all joints so that it is stiffer. To ensure to the stand was square I used wood clamps to attach my carpenters square when making the top and base and a speed square for the uprights, chances are you will not be able to use a level since its hard to find a large enough area that is level and if you use a level on an uneven surface and move the tank to a new location that is off level in a different way your stand will become severely unlevel and excess pressure will be place on the low side of the tank.

I stumbled across this video on youtube. Seems like a great stand build, and easy to follow. At 1:18 we see the first shots of the skeleton once put together. My question is: Are the cross braces even necessary on the bottom if a sheet of plywood is going to be screwed on top?

Oh and I almost swear this video is from MFK, I know I've seen it before somewhere. ;)

One of the independant LFS here sells stands for tanks up to 125 gallons that are nothing more than 4 2x4 with 2x6 across the top. There is a post from Pharoah that gives intersting info about wood strength. Most here like to WAY overbuild their stands (me included) when in reality it is ultimatly not needed. If I get by that store soon I will snap a pic.
