Far far away land
I have a 55 gallon that I am doing an experiment on for practice for when I get my 150 gallon tank. Less water and less water damage and practice.

List of supplies
-Water pump is a submersible marineland maxijet 1800
-20 gallon long for sump
-Scrubbies
-eggcrate
-Lots of 3/4" pvc

I want to know if i'm on the right track.

Just simple plumbing want to know if that is adequate to get it to the sump? Of course the "U" tube will be flush to the back of the tank. I was told by a friend a simple way to get it started was a turkey baster till it suctions.

The return to the tank will be a simple "r" shape with a spray bar to the tank.

Do I use pvc primer and cement or will just the cement be ok?

on the right track?

Use primer and cement. Its a 2 part reaction that welds the PVC together. Its not a high pressure system, so leaks aren't a huge issue, but I'd hate to see it rattle apart from the pump vibration.

Ok thanks used pvc with just cement before, but not for aquarium use. I just wanted to be on the safe side and ask.

Anybody have any comments on the overflow or better ideas?

when power goes out, your siphon will break. when the power goes back on your pump will pump the water from your sump into your tank and run dry... and if you are unlucky overflow over the sides of your tank... to run that set up u need a t with the hole at the lowest point you want your water level to be.

Would this be better it is one of the only pics I could find in other threads since attachments don't work anymore.

What is the purpose of the T valve? Would it be better to just add the t valve to the my current design or follow this new design?

that deign is proven, just make sure the t is above the bottom U inside the tank (grey section on that image) and the tube going up from the T make sure that extends above the water level. the other design that you worked on in theory you want the T on the top to work as a 2nd tank on the back so the siphon can equalize the levels and overflow out the t, when the water level lowers it should stop overflowing with out losing the siphon.... I'm working on one now, whne i'm down with my build, and test it ill post it on here

check out this link it explains the overflow system very well
