Hello MFK, we're new to the site and are hoping for help with an ID. The local LFS has this and claims it is a "whiptail catfish" originating from Thailand. We suspect it to be a member of the Bagarius genus but want to verify before purchasing it. Any input?image.jpegimage(1).jpeg

That's definitely a Bagarius. The presence of filaments or 'streamers' on the tail of a goonch is a well documented fact and quite normal.

I can't give you a definitive ID (though I have an idea) without pictures from the side. The all look pretty much the same from above.

Thanks for the responses guys. I went back and picked him up and finally have him settled in and got a couple pictures of him (try getting these guys to cooperate for photoshoots). Before lights out I dropped seven minnows in his tank last night and this morning they're all gone so I'm relieved that he's eating as he didn't show interest in any frozen foods I tried.

Did the fact they had this fish listed as a whiptail, mean you got him for about $5 ? I hope so! :) That would be a sweet mislabel.

If only if only. The price was actually what caught our attention because he was a "whiptail" catfish listed for $50. I'm not sure what bagarius typically sell for but I was content with the deal since I got him with a 50% off coupon and a gift certificate and walked out with him and a saltwater white ribbon eel for $10. Ill get some side shots up shortly as well as some pictures of the electric cat I picked up today, just have to get on my computer.

For some reason it isnt letting me upload pictures now from my phone, tablet, or computer but I'll keep trying.
