ive had my bichir, polypterus, dinosaur eel whatever for 5 years now never had any problems with him cleaned his tank every 2 weeks or so and fed him 10 fish every 2 weeks and hes been good for 5 years until reciently when i bought him his fish he had 1 left over from the last time i fed him (guess he rationes his food) anyway the next morning he had 5 fish left so he had eaten 6 fish which was normal for him well that afternoon he had started going crazy, he was deathrolling or spinning around, i thought it was a pectoral fin problem like maby he hurt or broke it loosing his balance which was causing him to spin i took out his houses and drained about 15 galons of warer out of the 29 galon tank (there are no rocks or gravel in the tank) and the next day he seemed to b stabalized for the time bieing i keped an eye on him he seemed fine but he wouldent eat any of the fish he had left so i thought maby hes still in shock and ill wait and see what happens well now its today and well hes acting up again doin the same thing he was hes not eating and is spinning like he has no balance so i put him in a galde bowl (plastic) put fresh water in it and put the bowl so its floating in the tank water and put the flow stone in it for air the heater is on in the tank keeping the fresh water in the bowl warm the temp in the tank is at 74 the purpose of the bowl was to keep him confined so he doesent bash his head off the glass sides of the tank which he was doing when he was swimming franticly anyway i dont kno what to do if theres any medicine for broken or hurt fins or if what hes doing sounds fimiliar to anyone its not fin rot that i know of theres no fungus growing off his fins so if anyone knows how to help it would b much appreciated

could be a parasite prob from the feeders!
bichirs do very well on pellets have you tried feeding these if he's not eating?

how big is he?

hikari massivore pellets seem to be the choice (i have nothing over 8" that eats pellets so i just feed ciclid pellets at the min)

si he in with any tankmates? is there anything that could have attacked/hurt him? i've never kept birchirs (yet) so your gonna have to wait till some of the other members come online for an answer.

maby will help determine the size of him i dunno if it matters or not but if it helps determine what i should feed him or anything else
