I just picked up a fluval 404 that did not have any media. What all do i need for it...i have the baskets and hte sponges plus i got alot of carbon from my old ac110 filter...will this carbon work and if so where exactly does it go? could anyone post a pic of what the basket is supposed to look like when it is setup up

I never use carbon. I'm pretty sure the water flows from bottom to top, so start out with some ceramics or other bio material on the bottom, then some coarse filter sponges or floss, then some fine filter floss to polish the water if you want

I have 2 404's and my setup is pretty simple. I don't use carbon and I just have ceramic bio-rings in all but one of the of the baskets. So, from bottom basket to top basket, my filters have:

1. rings, rings, rings
2. fluval prefilter rings (ceramic cylinders that came with the filter), rings, rings

These seem to do the job on my tank.

ok cool...looks like i wont be setting it up tonite lol...but thanks for all of hte help...wat is the deal with bio balls?

I use blue filter pads in the bottom two baskets and Fluval Biomax in the top two baskets. I buy the big blue filter pad sheet and cut it into pieces the size of the individual sides of the basket and put 5-6 in each side of the basket. Does well for mechanical filtration and it makes it easy to clean them.

if i do not have any other filters set up on the tank does there need to bee carbon in my 404's?
