I have a 100 gallon aquarium that I want to put corals, clams, and anemones in but dont know the best kind of lighting. There are so many different kinds and I am just confused. HELP

What kind of corals? For an anemone you have to have the tank established with steady parameters for 6-12 months. You'd need T5s or metal halides for it. It is not always the best idea to mix anemones witrh corals as they can travel & kill anything in ther path.

Same wait on an established, steady environment for a clam, as the anemone. Same for the lighting too. I did keep an crocea clam near the very top of my tank with PC bulbs.

No, that is the absolute minimum type lighting & they would have to be no less than 6" from the lights.

So what would be the best opition for me. I am trying to build my own hood and lighting fixtures w/o having to spend hundreds on lighting. Could I just buy light fixtures at home depot and put VHO or T5 lighting in to replace the flourescent. I was thinking 4 or 5 fixtures over the hood to give a lot of lighting.

Personaly, for the stock you want to keep, i would retro fit either metal halides with good balasts like Icecap or fit 4 or 5 tube T5 with individual reflectors to get maximum light sent down into the tank..

you need metal halide lighting. That is the most expensive, but once you get GOOD lighting you can house whatever your heart contents.

And metal halides can melt plastic if too close, thats whats so powerful.
