Hello All! I've been a member for awhile & have got great info here but I've never posted. So please forgive me if I do something that's not quite right. :)

I have a 150 gallon tank with a 12" Jack, 9" Jack, 12" Texas & a 6" African who grew up as a baby with the 12" Jack, that's the only reason I have him & they all get along fine.

I've had them all 4 together for a year now. The 12" Jack, Bertha, and the 9" Jack, Buddy, have been sitting at the bottom of the tank right next to each other in a corner hiding for the last 48 hrs. Buddy will come out and eat and swim around but goes right back to sit next to Bertha. Bertha hasn't come out at all. At first I thought they might be mating and Bertha might be laying eggs. But she hasn't dug a clean spot out or layed on the slate next to her so it doesn't appear they're mating. They both eat and Buddy I'm not worried about. It's Bertha. She just sits at the bottom of the tank. We hand feed her and she eats.

I separated the Texas & African to one side of the tank. When I did that today, Bertha came out and went into a cave I have built for them and she's still just sitting on the ground. Not laying on her side but looks quite listless and tilts slightly now. This is when I started to worry. Buddy just goes and sits next to her and then swims around so I'm not worried about him. It's her that's freaking me out. :nilly: She has no signs of trauma, nothing visible to be wrong and the water is perfect, none of the other fish are acting weird, etc. She's just been sitting at the bottom and now she's starting to tilt.

Any suggestions? I've put extra salt & added Melafix to be on the safe side but I'm not sure what else to do. I don't want her to die on me. I'm not sure how old she is. I bought her privately a year ago. I don't have the guys number anymore and not sure how long he'd had her. He'd raised her though.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

I'm attaching pics of Bertha, Buddy & Charlie (the African) so you can see how beautiful my babies are!

ahhhhhhhh, I love seeing Africans and SA/CA's living together in perfect harmony! Beautiful fish!

I really wouldn't do anything as it might cause additional stress. All you can do is ensure the water is balanced and oxygen is available.

It might sound weird, but you might try not feeding them for a few days and look for changes in behavior.

Those are the biggest jack dempsey's,I've ever seen. I hope she pulls thru.

Is it just me or do both jacks look to be males? Anyways, those jacks look very old and it might just be time for it to go. Not much you can do to counter the effects of age . . . How old are they?

I also was going to suggest fasting for 3 days. They can go that long easy and as mentioned above, watch for behavior changes.

i friggin' love huge jacks, i don't much care for them when they're small. i guess that's why i never picked one up. i agree, i think they might both be males though and you should try fasting for a day or two.

They are definately both males and look to be pretty old. May just be it's time. If you cannot find anything wrong then you have done all that your really can at the moment. Hopefully he will turn around.

Good luck
