l have a 300 Gallon pond with around 15 goldfish. I have had it for 2-3 years. Right now the water is real green and theres algea all around it on the pond. I don't use a filter besides a uv ray light that I just hooked up hoping it will fix the green water. But I have never really did much maintenance to my pond and I want to start keeping up with it better. So should I buy a filter? If so which and what pump? And should I do weekly water changes? And whatever else I need to know just tell me, Thanks.

I swear by Pondmaster. Either buy a Pondmaster pump and a Pondmaster pressurized filter or buy a Pondmaster pump and make a DIY filter. I have never had a Pondmaster pump fail in 15 years. They are great.

Even on a outdoor pond, water changes are a must. Do the normal water changes that you would do on an indoor tank to keep nitrates low.

You may also be overstocked depending on the size of the goldies. You have to remember goldies are very messy fish.

i get pumps cheap at harbor freights
pump water to a barrel and plumb the barrel to flow back to the pond.
fill barrel with filter media
im impressed all your fish are still alive lol
and the uv should clear up the green water.
there is a pump on it right?lol
and change some water once in a while
check my diy thread below for some filter ideas
modify for your needs ;)

Yeah I am surprised they are still alive also. I started with 4 last year and they keep having babies. I have over 20 now. I just found some more fry in the plants. I think I need to build another pond.

If you add higher plants it reduces the nutrients available to the algae and slows down it's growth. Shading the pond also helps.

I use Barley pads to control the pea soup water. In the spring and summer Hyacinth will grow like mad and cover the surface area subsequently choking off the algae.

Good luck

Without a filter, the UV light is not gonna help much. A UV light should be placed after the water passes through the filter. The UV light will kill of the algae which will then get caught in the filter the next time around. You definately need to add some sort of filtration

EDIT: How are you running this UV light if you dont have a pump??? Well at least that what it sounded like you said...

Def. get a filter and pump. Def. do maintenace....
