I cannot get him to eat, I've had him for a month and in that month hes eaten only 1 small minnow, and 1 cricket. I stopped doing feeder fish because I lost a lot of my fish from feeder related infections, I've been trying crickets but for the past 2 weeks he had 1. I tried cutting up shrimp and have had no luck. He's 6 inches long. Any suggestions? I'd really like to avoid feeders. How long can he go without eating, I'm about to take him back to the lfs.

Take the top off the tank and stand like 6ft. away from it,
and throw whatever it is you want it to eat into the water from that distance, make sure you've had the light on for 2 hours before you attempt to feed it. With a little persistence, and aim, you will get it.

Sounds a little whackey but works like a charm when you've got a stubborn eater.

learn a good quarantine regimen and use live feeders.

There is absolutely no reason for a feeder to ever give a fish a disease if you practice good fish keeping ethics.

Feeder fish like gold fish have very little nutrition and are fatty they are by no means a good food source gut loading them helps but still frozen foods are MUCH better plus theres the risk of parasites and such

Don't give up I did it there are a few things you can try keep starving him for one thing Try tossing in different foods like stated above the splashing helps to excite the fish Another thing i tried was to lossly tie a piece of fishing line to what you wan't to feed it and wiggle it around and jig it up and down to make it look alive this worked for me Lastly i would try live night crawlers the first thing i got my old needlenoses to eat was a piece of a night crawler cut them to size and throw in a nice wiggleing night crawler the sight of it wiggleing around might do the trick

Don't listen to the posts above its 100% possible to get them to eat prepared foods i even got mine to eat pellets a couple times just keep trying different things good luck
