so i just got home from aquarium store..i got my new alligator gar there just before and i put him in the tank now im very nervous that my Oscars will eat him! they both started to swim around him and one tryed to actually eat him 2 times. them seem a little more calm now but im still scared that they might get him while im sleeping or somthing ive been watching now and they keep swimming up then away but still not sure what might happen.

the oscars are between 3-4 inches and gar is about 3 inches

doees anyone have any recomondations on what to do i know i really cant do anything but still a little comfort might help lol

P.S. what exactly do gars eat

-THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP

no oscars with gar. that will solve your problem.

I have 2 suggestions:

1. Put the Gator Gar in another tank and feed him well for about a month or 2. Within that time he will grow to a substantial size at which point those oscars will become feeders. Then you can put him back in with the oscars and you won't have to buy feeders for about a week :headbang2

2. Just throw the oscars out. In my opinion Gars and rays are really the only fish that matter, anything else is just feeders or trash. Gars are to be the dominant species and if anything tries to prevent that then just get rid of them.

GAR POWER!!! :headbang2

1. dude-seperate the gar pronto!!! oscars can be bullies BIG TIME!!!
2. always have a backup plan when adding new fish-that way if it doesn't work out, you'll know what to do!
3. grab a fish net and welcome to mfk!

and oh yea, they eat feeder rosy reds/goldfish (depending on the size) just look at the pics in the previous guys avitars lol....and freeze dried shrimp-just trained mine to eat it

I just read a few other threads on this and it really comes down to the size of the fish in question. Your fish are about the same size but the Gar is going to grow quickly. How is this situation now, have the oscars become feeders yet?

gators are gap limited. those oscars will not be feeders for a long long time. a 2 or 3 foot gator would be need to eat them do to the size of the gap(throuht opening)

It seems to be fish roulette!
Guess i'm lucky with my gentle Oscar that does not care for the dead fish I feed my Gar.
First days in the tank my Oscar got snapped in the tail by the small Gar and lost interst in bullying him.
My Oscar is handfed and so is my Gar, so there's no trouble.
But I know things can change but for now the Gar is growing very fast and trouble will be less with a BIG FAT Gar, I suppose...

thanks for all the help guys my gar is now fine though with the Oscars after the first night they went separate ways now they don't get in each others ways and its all good =)
