New to salt water and decided that I want to turn my tank into a salt. As of right now I have a 40 breeder that is going to be converted. Its setup for fresh water but I need to turn it. Now my question is once I go salt do I need to recycle? Also he fish I plan on keeping is a clowm fish and a small species of puffer fish. Will they get along? Also how much salt will I need for them? Thanks guys!

I wouldn't do it, the proper way to set up a marine tank is to use live rock and a skimmer as your bacteria. Live rock will take up a lot of room and displace quite a bit of water then adding in a puffer and a clown is asking for trouble in my opinion. People have successfully kept that combo in a 55, in a 40 I suggest just going with the clown and some smaller fish or shrimp will have the best long term success.

I was planning live rock. Im going to disagree with you since the 40 breeders have a much better foot print than a 55. I was thinking 2 clowns (hopefully a breeding pair) and the smallest puffer in the hobby.

Yes you need to recycle. Tear the whole tank down and start from scratch. I agree with puffykid, too. The puffer probably wouldn't be a match for the clown and even if it was, you would limit your future stocking options.

That sucks. My gf agreed to a tank in our room but it has to be a puffer. What are some good salt starter fish? She's dead set on a puffer but I'm not to crazy about wasting a 40 breeder on a puffer

puffer would be fine dude. get a valentini and theres about an 85%+ chance they'll be absolutely fine
